About

Bold, vibrant and totally captivating, Scottish artist Alli Gray’s unique, semi abstract paintings are highly expressive and dynamic depictions of group identities. She has worked with oil paint for more than 15 years and during that time has developed her unique, individual style and personal visual language.

Born in Glasgow, Alli has participated in many art exhibitions throughout the UK. Her works are also held in private collections in Canada, the United States, Spain, and New Zealand.

“The aim of my work is to visually break down barriers to reflect on unity, and in a broader context consider the current problems within our social landscape. Exploring intimate scenes provides a way to examine the role of the individual in strengthening bonds and allows me to communicate the aspect of shared histories, ambitions and perceptions which bind families and cultures together. Depicting the commonality of people is vital to illustrate the importance of our relationships in the way they shape our character and worldview.

The initial sketches are deconstructed to work towards developing a semi abstract and more stylised form, and by finding a compromise between representation and expressionism with each piece this allows me to explore colour fully with a vibrant palette.

I have been inspired by many genres of art and design from 19th and early 20th century French Impressionism, Bay Area Figuration, Art Nouveau, Japanese art and the Bauhaus art school. Other genres include sculptors such as Henry Moore and Richard Serra, whose universal themes and minimal, organic abstraction I find endlessly fascinating.”
